Chanel Sees the "Big Picture" and Utilizes Plus Size Model for Campaign

Curvy model Crystal Renn has nabbed the coveted spot for a new ad campaign with Chanel. And no one is more shocked than her. The size 10 model told Fashionista that the campaign for the reopening of the Chanel store in SoHo is the "proudest moment of my life." “I’m absolutely freaking out,” she said.

Renn left the straight-size modeling world after who struggling anorexia and exercise bulimia. Since reemerging as a 'plus-size' model, she has gone on to appear on more than seven international issues of Vogue. The brand's choice comes as a surprise, seeing as designer Karl Largerfeld has been outspoken critic of plus-size models. He told a German magazine that no one wanted to see curvy models on their TV screens. "You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly," he said to the Daily Mail.

Renn attributes her recent deal to a changing view in the fashion industry and a new ideal for models to live by. “It’s about a personality and a moment captured...it’s not about body size it’s about talent and effort," said Renn to Fashionista. "I hope the industry sees this [campaign] as an example of that.”
